The Mafia Code “omerta”

An oath is administered in the room so this ceremony is behind the close doors and new members are being inducted in a mysterious organization. Every new member is dropping some drops of blood on a paper carrying a sacred image in the first instance. Then this paper will be burnt. Holding this burning paper, every member will read out a secret oath that he will never disclose secrets of the organization to anyone and always obey the commands of his boss especially an attack on one member of the organization will be the attack on all and that will be revenged. So every member will formly become member of the organization after taking this oath. The status he will get is “man of honour”. The most important part of the code “omerta” is keeping the secret of the organization and also do not make the contact with authorities.

The oath further forbids members from writing down anything about the mafia’s activities. Such may become evidence used against the gang. In their strongholds, the group imposes the oath on the population. Residents, though they do not swear, are expected to remain silent of the gang’s ills, lest they are punished by death. A Sicilian proverb goes, “He who is deaf, blind, and silent will live a hundred years in peace.
